In this course, we will discuss opportunities to serve with the aging living in our own neighborhoods and throughout our communities. Over 90% of the elderly live in their own homes or with their own families; 2/3 of those over 85 live in their own homes or with family. 85% of those with dementia live in the community and not in institutions. Further, loneliness among seniors in Canada is recognized as “an epidemic”: 1.4 million Canadians report feeling lonely. COVID has increased this number. 80% of the seniors ages 80 years and over say that they feel lonely up to 80% of the time. This course provides and overview of this situation, a profile of those in our communities, ans considers how we might respond.
